What is this event? Writers carry the torch by writing/planning/creating in one hour legs, then pass the torch off to other writers. We will be passing the torch throughout the weekend!
When is it? The weekend of November 16th and 17th. Due to times zone differences, for some, it may begin late on November 15th or end on the 18th — please view the schedule below to see the dates and times in you own time zone.
Where will it happen? In our dedicated RAWR Torch Relay channel on Discord.
McGee’s Relay Rules:
- The torch bearer must write/create/plan for a full hour.
- You may take restroom and snack breaks.
- It’s an honor system, and we’re more concerned that you have fun!
- Use a fire emoji/picture to pass off and accept the torch.
- If the torch is dropped, the entire marathon starts over.
- Holler if you need help!** Body pain, unexpected company, a phone call, emergencies, etc. happen! Ping “@Torch Bearer” and several people will come to the rescue!
- After each leg, post in the channel with an update of your progress.
(Share your word count, pages written, planning, or other project progress!)
McGee’s Torch Tips:
- Visit the “role-up” channel on Discord and assign yourself the Torch Bearer role. That way, we can ping you whenever another torch bearer needs backup.
- Having fun is the main priority of this event! Participation relies on an honor system. Flexibility is key. Rules are suggestions. Time isn’t real.
- Do you have questions or need help? Contact Kae, Eitan, or EmpressTheodora on Discord.
FAQ
Q. Do I really have to write for literally an hour straight?
A. No! Take bathroom breaks, take time to think, drink water. The point is that you’re actively engaged with your project for that full hour. This means it’s also fair game for those of you doing Aether custom goals and tracking time/pages/lines instead of words.
Q. But what if I get distracted or the phone rings or someone comes to my door?
A. Life happens. You still carried the torch. Ping “@Torch Bearer” to call for backup. As long as you can pass it to the next person in line, the relay hasn’t been broken. We’re all on the same team and have your back!
Q. What happens if I sign up and need to cancel?
A. If you can’t find backup, tell Kae, Eitan, or EmpressTheodora, and they’ll handle it from there. If you can find backup, please also let them know so they can update the schedule.
Q. HOW do I pass the torch?
A. First, know who your partners are! Check out the calendar to see who is passing you the torch and who you’re passing to. All you need to do is tag them in a message in the Relay channel and report how your session went. (Bonus Fun: Include emojis and/or gifs of torches, fire, and races!)
Q. What do you mean, “report how my session went”?
A. After your torch-passing message, post something along the lines of, “I wrote X words/pages!” or “I brainstormed and outlined 3 scenes!” or “I worked on art for 50 minutes!” We want to celebrate what you accomplished during your hour!
Q. HOW DO I SIGN UP?
A. First, keep scrolling and view the schedule. This should display in your own local time zone! If you see a time slot that you want to take, scroll down further and sign up for it! We want as many people as possible to enjoy the fun; until we say otherwise, please sign up for one hour per day. Reach out to Kae, Eitan, or EmpressTheodora on Discord if you need help or encounter any difficulties. NOTE: If you’re viewing this on mobile, the calendar cuts off the second day — just scroll sideways to view it.
